Programs conducted for the youth of the community provide healthful activities for the youngsters and give them the opportunity to develop healthy relationships with each other. During the year a wide variety of programs are offered. The following is a list of programs conducted during the year with a brief description of each.
Arts & Crafts
Arts and Crafts are held throughout the year and it is also a favorite Day Camp activity. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday.
Our basketball court is available for drop-in games daily from September through May.
Chess, Checkers, Monopoly, Bingo and many other games are offered to all ages.
Classes are held Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for girls and boys from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Over 100 molds are available for use.
The Watervliet Civic Center has a state of the art computer room, which is available to all members. All of the computers have internet access and members can work on their homework and school assignments, search the web, play games and other areas of interest.
These activities are offered to boys and girls ages 7 – 13, which include: Dodgeball, Kickball, Whiffleball, Musical Games and many others.
Over the course of the fall, we might take a group out on the field for an organized game. These games include flag football, soccer, and softball. While these games aren’t offered every day they are drop-in and friendly for all ages. These activities are offered to boys and girls ages 7-16.
Our staff is available to help set goals, teach the fundamentals of fitness and proper equipment use to children 10 and older. This program is offered Monday and Tuesday evenings from September through May.
Our Nutrition Program is held Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Children 10 and older are welcome to join us to learn healthy recipes and cooking techniques from September through May.
Olympic and Universal Weight Training
The Watervliet Civic Center Gym has been renovated with a variety of modern equipment and weights. While our Fitness Program is instructional and offered Monday and Tuesday evenings, children aged 14 and older can use the weight training equipment. We have a variety of aerobic and cardio equipment as well which is available to children ages 12 and older who use it responsibly.
The Civic Center has 7 pool tables, 2 ping pong tables, 2 foosball tables, a bumper pool table, a dome hockey table and an air hockey table. Tournaments are held throughout the year in 3 age groups: 7 – 11, 12 – 14 and 15 – 18.
Movies are shown on Thursday and Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday afternoon.
Tournaments in Ping Pong, Bumper Pool, Pool, 2-On-2 Basketball, Free-throw/3-point competitions, Foosball, and various Video Game tournaments are conducted throughout the year. Youth who win our tournaments are given the option for their picture to be displayed on our bulletin board until the next round of competitions.
Our homework helper is available in the computer room Monday through Thursday evenings from 6pm until 8pm.
Other Special Activities
We often offer special activities over school-breaks. In the past these have included ‘Paint and Snack’, Pancake and Movie days, cookie making, computer classes, and more.
Most of the programs are offered each year at the Watervliet Civic Center. In addition to these programs, the Civic Center is a meeting place for various community organizations.
